Gender is an important social determinant of health, but conventional health monitoring does not always capture how gender interacts with other social and structural factors to influence health outcomes. This JA PreventNCD scoping review protocol aims to identify gender-sensitive and intersectionality-informed health indicators that can provide a more nuanced picture of health inequalities and support more equitable health reporting.
The review will examine research and grey literature from EU and OECD countries to identify existing gender-sensitive health indicators, the theoretical approaches behind them and the extent to which they incorporate an intersectional perspective. Rather than looking only at differences between women and men, the approach considers how gender can intersect with factors such as age, socioeconomic position, ethnicity and other dimensions of advantage and disadvantage.
The evidence identified through the review will contribute to the development of a set of gender-sensitive and intersectionality-informed indicators for German Federal Health Reporting. As part of JA PreventNCD, the proposed indicators will be discussed with experts in health monitoring and reporting, refined through a Delphi process and ultimately used to strengthen the integration of gender equality and intersectionality into population health monitoring.
