Webinar on Commercial Determinants of Health the Impact on Public Policy Making
Save the Date! 29th October 2024
The commercial sector plays a significant role in influencing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and cancers through its practices, products, and systems. This webinar aims to raise awareness about the strategies employed by commercial entities to influence public policy-making processes and to propose potential strategies for policymakers to prevent commercial interests from undermining the implementation of policies designed to improve public health and well-being.

September Recap: A Busy Month for JA PreventNCD
September marked a significant month for the JA PreventNCD project, with key events that shaped the direction of our work moving forward. Here are the highlights:
ExCo and EEAB Meetings in Menorca
The second in-person meeting of the JA PreventNCD Executive Committee (ExCo) took place on September 24-25, 2024, on Lazareto Island, Menorca. This meeting was an important milestone, bringing together the ExCo and the External Expert Advisory Board (EEAB) for the first time since the project’s launch. Both bodies reviewed the project’s progress, provided strategic input, and set the course for the next phases of the initiative.
The event garnered local media coverage, with articles published in both Spanish and Menorquín:
- Menorca Info - Intervenciones locales están mejorando la salud de las comunidades
- IB3 - Europa s’arma al Llatzeret per plantar cara al càncer i a les malalties no transmissibles

Strengthening NCD Monitoring Systems: Joint Event Between WHO, JACARDI, and JA PreventNCD
On September 10, 2024, a collaborative event titled “Strengthening NCD Monitoring Systems in the EU: A Collaborative Approach” was held at Sciensano in Brussels. Co-organized by WHO, JACARDI, and JA PreventNCD, the event convened leaders from various sectors to discuss ways to enhance the monitoring and management of NCDs across Europe.
Key discussions centered on improving data collection, fostering partnerships, and creating a more cohesive strategy to reduce NCD rates. The gathering underscored the shared responsibility of tackling NCDs and the power of multi-sector collaboration.
Key Past Events and Collaborations
Though our focus has been on September, we would like to acknowledge some of the major events and collaborations earlier this year:
Wellbeing Economy Forum - Iceland, June 2024
This forum, held in Reykjavík, focused on the intersection of health and sustainability, bringing together experts to discuss policies that promote wellbeing. Save the date for next year’s event, which will take place on May 8th-9th, 2025.

Collaboration with Four Action Grants
Our project is closely connected with four action grants—ELISAH, FILTERED, PEACHD, and Showup4Health—which focus on complementary aspects of NCD prevention. This collaboration strengthens our overall approach to combating NCDs.

Other EU Initiatives
In addition to the action grants, other significant EU initiatives are aligned with the goals of JA PreventNCD, contributing to the broader effort to combat non-communicable diseases.
JACARDI
JACARDI (Joint Action on Cardiovascular Disease) is a prominent EU project dedicated to reducing the burden of cardiovascular diseases through coordinated action and policy development. JACARDI works by integrating efforts across various sectors, promoting research, and supporting the implementation of evidence-based practices in cardiovascular health.
