This deliverable from Work Package 9 (Healthy and Sustainable Food Systems) examines how the drivers of Europe’s food supply—spanning agricultural production, trade, and consumer markets—influence dietary patterns and population health.
The analysis highlights how existing policies, including the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and food industry incentives, can unintentionally favour ultra-processed and less nutritious products. It calls for a systemic transition toward food environments that make the healthy and sustainable choice the easy choice for everyone.
The report provides actionable recommendations to policymakers and stakeholders on how to integrate nutrition, health, and environmental objectives into agricultural and food trade frameworks. By doing so, it contributes to Europe’s broader goals under the Farm to Fork Strategy, EU Beating Cancer Plan, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
