Health literacy is a key determinant of health, influencing people's ability to access, understand, evaluate and use health information and services. Strengthening health literacy can support healthier lifestyles, increase the uptake of preventive measures, improve health outcomes, and help reduce health inequalities across populations.

This factsheet presents key insights from a mapping of health literacy interventions across nine European countries, with a particular focus on initiatives that contribute to the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The mapping aimed to identify interventions with potential for scalability, sustainability and transferability across European contexts

The identified interventions were assessed using criteria such as effectiveness, equity, sustainability, transferability and stakeholder participation. Of the 19 interventions that met the inclusion criteria, seven were identified as promising practices, while none fulfilled all criteria required to be considered a best practice.

The factsheet provides an overview of the methodology, key findings and examples of promising interventions that can support health literacy and NCD prevention across Europe.
