Rebuilding a healthier Paiporta through a community-driven process

Valencia Article

More than a year has passed since the floods swept through the town near Valencia (Spain). Now, the reconstruction of Paiporta is moving into a new phase focused on citizen participation with health promotion and NCD prevention perspectives. During the month of February, a series of workshops have been held in different neighbourhoods and high schools with the aim of gathering specific proposals tailored to each area of the municipality.

The process, promoted by the City Council and the JA Prevent NCD partners –Fisabio and the Valencian General Directorate of Public Health– combines up-to-date information on the reconstruction and participatory dynamics with the Healthy Environments tool. Going forward, the initiative will also address obesity prevention, applying similar participatory methods and a tool tailored for analysing obesogenic environments, continuing to connect urban reconstruction to long-term community well-being.

So far, nearly 200 students and over 70 adult residents have participated in the sessions, setting out their needs and desires for improving their environment and health. Both participants and municipal authorities provided positive feedback, highlighting the active participation and constructive atmosphere that reinforces the collective commitment to the town’s recovery.
